Mobile Retroreflectometer Unit

Product Certification & Compliance

Product Certification and Compliance

Our RetroTek mobile retroreflectometer unit has been independently tested to meet the standards specified in ASTM E 1710 and EN1436 with same levels of accuracy and repeatability as handheld retroreflectometers.

In addition, some Road Agencies conduct their own independent verification tests and where the RetroTek has been through these tests, they are also listed here.

Relevant CEN & ASTM Standards for Retroreflectivity of Pavement Markings and Retroreflectometers

CEN – EN 1436 Road marking materials – Road marking performance for road users and test methods
This European Standard specifies the performance for road users of white and yellow road markings, as expressed by their reflection in daylight or under road lighting, retroreflection in vehicle headlamp illumination, colour and skid resistance. Furthermore, the standard specifies test methods and conditions.

ASTM E3320 – 21 Standard Test Method for Measurement of Retroreflective Pavement Marking Materials Using a Mobile Retroreflectometer Unit (MRU)
This test method covers measurement of the retroreflective properties of horizontal pavement marking materials containing retroreflecting optics, such as traffic stripes and surface symbols, using a mobile retroreflectometer unit that can be operated at traffic speed, mounted on a vehicle to measure the retroreflection at a prescribed geometry.

ASTM E 1710-18 Standard Test Method for Measurement of Retroreflective Pavement Marking Materials with CEN-Prescribed Geometry Using a Portable Retroreflectometer.
This test method covers measurement of the retroreflective properties of horizontal pavement marking materials containing retroreflecting beads, such as traffic stripes and surface symbols, using a portable retroreflectometer that can be placed on the road delineation to measure the retroreflection at a prescribed geometry.

AASHTO T 398 (This standard was formerly designated as provisional method of test TP 111) Measuring Retroreflectivity of Pavement Marking Materials Using a Mobile Retroreflectivity Unit.
This test method covers measurement of the retroreflective properties of dry, horizontal pavement marking materials, using a Mobile (vehicle-mounted) Retroreflectivity Unit (MRU) operated at posted roadway speeds at a prescribed geometry. The prescribed geometry corresponds to the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) geometry and is the standard geometry adopted by ASTM E1710. This test method ensures that night-time visibility provided by pavement markings is adequate. This applies to the measurement of the pavement marking retroreflectivity using mobile instruments.

ASTM D7585/D7585M-10(2022Standard Practice for Evaluating Retroreflective Pavement Markings Using Portable Hand-Operated Instruments
This practice describes several field techniques to evaluate the retroreflective properties of pavement markings containing retroreflecting optics (for example, centerlines and edge lines) and applied to the road surface. The techniques described in this practice contain sampling criteria such as the length of test sections and the number of measurements needed. The practice is based on retroreflective measurements made with portable hand-operated instruments in compliance with Test Method E1710.

ASTM E2177-20 Standard Test Method for Measuring the Coefficient of Retroreflected Luminance (RL) of Pavement Markings using the Bucket Method in a Condition of Wet Recovery
This test method covers the measurement of the wet retroreflective (RL) properties of horizontal pavement marking materials, such as traffic stripes and road surface symbols, using a portable retroreflectometer that can be placed on or before the road marking to measure the retroreflection at the prescribed geometry. This method of measuring the wet retroreflective properties (RL) of pavement markings measures the wet retroreflectivity in a condition of wet recovery.

ASTM E2832-12(2017) Standard Test Method for Measuring the Coefficient of Retroreflected Luminance of Pavement Markings in a Standard Condition of Continuous Wetting (RL-2)
This test method covers a measurement of the wet retroreflective (RL-2) properties of horizontal pavement marking materials, such as traffic stripes and road surface symbols. A standardized method utilizing a standardized continuous wetting device and a portable retroreflectometer is described to obtain measurements of the wet retroreflective properties of horizontal pavement markings. Retroreflective performance obtained with this test in a standardized condition of continuous wetting does not necessarily relate to how markings perform in all conditions of natural rain.

RetroTek USA has also carried out this wet test inhouse to  ASTM E2177 & EN 1436 standards but the results are not independently certified.

ASTM E2177 and also EN1436 section B.6 Test Certificate  regarding the suitability of the RetroTek-M Mobile Pavement Retroreflectometer for measuring the coefficient of retroreflected luminance RL of the surfaces of road markings in Wet conditions.
Determination of the suitability of the RetroTek-M Mobile Pavement Retroreflectometer with 30 m geometry (referred to below as “RetroTek-M”) for measuring the coefficient of retroreflected luminance RL of the surfaces of road markings, in a lab on wet samples, and  on a road surface in wet conditions. Comparison with measurements from a portable measuring device Determine the accuracy of the RetroTek-M by comparing the RL measurements from the RetroTek-M with those obtained with the portable (handheld) retroreflectometer LTL-XL on a road marking test field.
